This is a pictorial diary from August 2003 BACK to February 2001.

2003

Albert Lea: August 9, 10

Prima Molted Wallis Simpson was WB on Sat. and Prima Helza Dreamin' Simone was WB on Sun. They were the only 2 bitches entered. My Frenchie, Prima Augustine from Twin Lakes got 3 of 3 on Sat. and WD for 4 points on Sun. Then I sold him back to Lonny Stoffer.

NCIPC: June 14

My girls did awful. Never got more than 3rd place in any class.

2002

August: Des Moines. I did nothing and it was my last show of the year. Concentrated on getting moved.

June:

NCIPC: Had an entry of 60 for the regular classes under Gareth Morgan-Jones. Once again it was a surprise ending for breed. There were 13 beautiful specials in the ring. After his first examination of each individual dog, Mr. Morgan-Jones made a cut to 4 dogs and 2 bitches. As he had done consistently throughout his judging, Mr. Morgan-Jones put his favorite dog on the table for a second time. This pick was a beautiful dog I'd never seen or heard of, Hellbranch Balmoral, shown by Karen Volk. His 2nd pick was Teddy who he put on the table to compare to the first dog. He compared 4 or 5 other dogs to the Hellbranch dog. Then he had Karen put her dog back in line. Then he put WD and WB back on the table I believe. And back down again. One more go 'round sez he. And then, he chose Patty Metzger's import, Yakee Yearn for Me, who was WD from the 6-9 puppy class (he also took the Sweeps) as his BOB winner and the Sankey's little Chu Lai Roverette, who was WB, for BOS. A surprise and a delight especially for the owners.

After the hulabaloo had settled a bit we had our auction (I won NOTHING) and a delicious buffet. A highlight of the day was seeing my old friend, Ruby Dudley. Connie Hayes, her granddaughter, had brought her to the show. She looked wonderful - 90 years young! As she sat ringside, I saw her looking over each exhibit and dutifully marking her catalog. Later I sat by her and we had a lively discussion of a couple of the exhibits and the exhibitors! What a delight it was to hear her viewpoint again. Betty Viele was there as well, courtesy of Bert Custodio. I missed seeing Cleda Olsen, another old-timer who usually makes it to the show to observe. Bob and Mary Ann Jackson looked wonderful and showed several glamorous puppies.

Arlon and I drove back to Monticello in good spirits. Our dogs had shown well and placed in the classes. Sunday I took off for Clear Lake where I spent a delightful afternoon with the Mottos, taking in a little site-seeing tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Mason City. Then I headed back to Sioux Falls.

April:

Mason City: Took just two bitches, Grace and Gertrude. This was Gert's first show and she did just fine walking happily for both Frank and me. Arlon was the big winner both days as he took WB both days and finished two bitches. Then Deb Thompson's Zeus, bred by Arlon, took WD on Sunday to finish. WD Saturday was one of the Prairie Breeze puppies.

February:

Central Iowa: Teddy took breed and group 3. Photo by Pete Melia.

January:

NCIPC was first up as usual this year. Sweepstakes judge, Jason Ulmer, gave my little Grace 3 of 3. Regular class judge, Peggy Reed, gave her 2 of 3. Ms. Reed didn't even choose Teddy to put back on the table in the second go-round. His beauty and presence did, however, make her stop in her tracks and smile at him in the last look...but it was too late. She had her eye on Arlon's Dream and Deann's Johnny Angel eventually giving the nod to Dream. However, it wasn't for breed she was considering them...it was for BOS. Patty Metzger's open bitch, Precious, went up for breed.

2001 Highlights - Lowlights

Teddy and I went to 26 shows. Here I'll try to relate some details about some of the shows. These are in order from most recent to the opposite of most recent.

November:

Here's a good looking group eating at Piccolos in Omaha. Left to right are: Deb Thompson, DeAnn Ulmer, Frank and Bev Motto, me, Arlon, Pam Bethke. At the Frenchie ring.

Omaha was a bust for Teddy and me and Willie and Bev. Got beat all 3 days by Johnny Angel and DeAnn. Phooey! A disappointing weekend made a bit worse by having to give back dear little Amy to her owners. I'll miss you Amy. A disappointing weekend made a bit better by getting back my naughty little Ernestine. 10 months down in sunny Missouri with the Stoffers and she didn't come in heat. Comes home and...you guessed it, in heat two days later! I can't seem to win in the ring or in the whelping box - J As usual, we had good food, and good friends with whom to share our time. And the weather...well, that was UNUSUAL. It was beautiful all weekend!

October:

Got an invitation to the Eukanuba Classic Dog Show - Teddy hung on and is the #20 Peke in the nation for breed points - big whoop. Take a look at this boy...he's beautiful. He should be #1...and he is in MY book!

September:

Des Moines, IA - Had a great time as usual. The site has has been enclosed and there's still much work to be done there but I think once they get it all finished it'll be an improvement. The air conditioner is the number one concern I have - it was awfully hot in the building. Here's a few pictures taken by Frank Motto. Teddy did so good for me the first day. Falconi was really taken with him and he kept going back and forth between Teddy and the Iggy for group 1, eventually giving it to the IG. Second day, Teddy lost breed.

June:

Joliet, IL - NCIPC (North Central Illinois Pekingese Club), my favorite Specialty. I took Teddy and Ursula. Although rumor had it that Teddy was a shoe-in for breed, and he did show and look beautiful, as usual, he did not win. Ursula got last in her sweepstakes class under Grace Connelly (wah) and first in her class under Vandy Williams (wow). Ursula was grrrrrring at everyone when I had her on the table for grooming. She'll take treats from anyone but she doesn't like them petting her. Patty Metzger took some time in going over her for me and kinda socializing her. And Jason Cook was very brave in also helping to get her used to people petting her. jasoncook.jpg (12774 bytes)

Here's a picture of Jason taking a picture of me at the Jackson's After-Show Party. Jason's a good-looking young man and I should've gotten another pic, eh, Jason? Yah!

Ursula didn't show very well at all - tail down. But I kept happy-talking her. I picked her up while the others were taking their turns showing and I showed her the people at ring-side and the big wooden Chinamen and Peke heads we have for decoration around the ring. ursncipc1lighter.JPG (13483 bytes)And for the last go 'round, she got a bit happier and walked okay to get the nod for first in her class. By the time WB came around, she was walking pretty good and got the nod for RWB to Bert Custodio's Tradewinds Benaires Delilah. Ursula also was awarded Best Puppy. Yay! The main thing was she didn't bite anyone. Whew!!

My dear friends, Bev and Frank Motto took WD with their Willie. We were thrilled for them. This win was a 4-point major and finished Willie. Willie.jpg (9392 bytes)

Here's Willie enjoying himself

at the Jackson's.

arlonhenry.jpg (8690 bytes)The big BISS went to Pleiku Gold Dream for Lon-Du owned by the all-wise, all-knowing, all-seeing, Arlon Duit and the McDonalds. Arlon handled the auction out at the Jackson's very capably without the help of his nemesis, Sweet Georgia Brown. Don't have a pic of Arlon with Dream, but here he is with Henry who was RWD.

rockinghorse.jpg (35055 bytes) Here's the very beautiful rocking horse made and donated to the auction by Richard and Shirley Hogben. Karen Reid was the lucky high bidder. There was a beautiful Pekingese "throw" that was hotly contested for by two parties and eventually brought nearly $300 to the club. I bid on and won an original "Metzger" and a little Pekingese book. It was a great time.

Here's a couple more party shots.

Next show - probably nothing till Des Moines in September.

May:

Madison, WI - This was my second time out to this great show venue. Was more crowded than last year and they could have been quicker to turn on the A/C each day. Again made the trip with my Dashund friend, Pam Bethke who was so kind to lend Bonnie and me her Windstar for the whole weekend. Pam stayed with her friend, Jan.

Teddy lost to Monopoly on Friday - Nuts. Friday night we all went out to supper at Applebees and had some great food and conversation.

Arlon and Bob still at it. The Maske/Atwell team. Mary Ann...Ted's breeder.

Saturday and Sunday Teddy beat Monopoly!!!! YAY!! These were big shows too. And guess what...Teddy was awarded a group 1 by Sharon mad01satbob.JPG (15336 bytes) Krogh. Man, she does the selection really mad01satgrp.JPG (11727 bytes) neat too. We're all lined up in this huge ring. And I'll bet every Toy breed was represented there too...maybe even 2 or 3 of some breeds.   Anyway, Mrs. Krogh eyed us all up and down the line. Then she walked slowly but deliberately in my direction. She bent down to me and very quietly said "How would you like to take your place in front of the #1 spot." WOW! I thought she was just gonna tell me to line up somewhere for a "pull." But there I was with Teddy at the 1st in Group sign! Yeah!!

Again, what made it an extra thrill was sharing it with friends like Arlon and Bonnie and Barb Maske and Jeri Atwell and even sweeter...the JACKSONs! They are the breeders of Teddy and they were able to help me celebrate this fabulous moment.

Right after group, I had to get Ursula to the toy group puppy ring for best puppy ursula2.jpg (23884 bytes) competition. She lost, as well she should have, because she's a naughty little girl and doesn't like other people and almost was ready to bite Mrs. Krogh I think! And then she likes to walk to the very edge of the mat and walks behind me and....well, let's just say I need to work with her more.

Bonnie and I were invited to Marie Dorie's and her friend, Violet's for supper. We had Italian and great conversation and a quick look at the most recent issue of the Orient Express that Marie just received. Violet and I have much in common and it was fun to talk opera, jazz, piano, contests, etc. It was nice to see little Storm again, that Brenda Scheiblauer had recently finished. I'd put his first point on him last fall and hadn't seen him since. He looked wonderful. We drove back to our motel in pouring rain. It let up just enough so I could exercise the dogs before we hit the hay.

Sunday was a great day as well. Not only did Teddy get BOB again but  judge, Tim Catterson, awarded JJ, the open dog I'm showing for June Strange, WD/BOW!

Mr. Catterson also awarded Ted a group 3 to cap off the whole weekend.

madjj.JPG (9318 bytes) mad01sungrp.JPG (21408 bytes)

Omaha, NE - Back down to earth and getting beat by Johnny Angel both days. How disappointing. But that's the way it goes at the dog shows. Both Monopoly and Johnny are nice dogs and judges have different opinions. JJ received RWD both days and I was very happy for the Mottos who were on Cloud 9 when their dog, Willie, got WD for his first major on Sunday. Ulmer's open dog won on Saturday receiving his first major.

The Omaha show marked the end of their show careers for a couple of the canine competitors: Poor Arlon had a heck of a time controlling his Michael for the judge on Sunday. Michael will finally get his way and stay home with the girls. My travel mate, Bonnie, retired her bitch, Truly. Bonnie has a new small female who she'll bring out at NCIPC mid-June.

NCIPC is my next show. Should be a lot of fun. Pooh to all Peke competitors who don't think they have a chance to win. One never knows what a judge is gonna do. As soon as you think you have a judge all figured out, he changes his ways. You should at least show up to watch. How can you pass up a chance to see all the beautiful Pekes? I can't. I hardly ever miss NCIPC. Oh, I know...some times we just can't go. Well, I'll tell you all about it in a few weeks.

April:

Apple Valley, MN - Teddy lost to Johnny Angel both days - Booo! Chatted a bit with the Ulmers. They went over my little Ursula, who was there for socialization only. Larry made me an offer on her but I told him I'd need a minivan with less than 50,000 miles on it to even be considered. Hehehe. Sorry, Larry.

Marshalltown, IA - Great weekend. Although he had no other competition from specials for breed, Teddy went on to back-to-back group 1's! YAY! And what added to it was that I was able to share my good luck with my dear friends, Arlon Duit, Bonnie Debolt, and Bev and Frank Motto. We ate at this marvelous steakhouse, Stone's, under a viaduct. It was delish!

March:

Kansas City, MO - Teddy lost to Johnny Angel both days - Booo! I picked up Amy, a little pied French Bulldog bitch I'll show for the Stoffers while they see to it that Ernestine comes in heat and gets bred to Champ before either one of them dies of old age! Erni's been down there since February and no sign of heat yet!! Bigger BOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sioux City, IA - Teddy was breed both days. Group 2 on Sunday. Yay!!

scsun.JPG (12421 bytes)

February:

St. Joseph, MO - Teddy took breed both days but did not place in group. Rats!

Des Moines, IA - Teddy beat Johnny Angel for breed but did not place in group. I went with my friends from Clear Lake, IA, Bev and Frank Motto. Met a rather new Peke person, Deb Thompson, from Des Moines. She's showing a little Lon-Du dog called, Zeus.
